I have been with my amazing partner David for 8 years now. We've been through a lot together, and in the last couple of years he has had to watch me deteriorate, which has been hard for both of us. People often assume David is my carer, not my boyfriend - until they get to know us.
He is not my carer, although he takes great care of me. In fact, he is my unsung hero who on several occasions has literally held my life in his hands as he has had the terrifying task of manipulating my skull back onto my spine when it has dislocated during a seizure (known as ‘internal decapitation’).
My spinal fusion surgery will change all this – it will relieve the pressure on my brain stem that is causing the seizures and it will stabilise my neck and skull. It will enable me to start living life again. I can't wait to go on 'normal’ dates where my boyfriend can be my boyfriend and we can have fun together.
David, I love you more than words can say.
